
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26 1926 - October 18 20th, 2000) was an American singer and actress her career spans more than 40 years. London, a torch singer loved for her smooth, mellow vocals and languid contralto voice and recorded more than 30 albums of pop and jazz classics between 1955-1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her performance of "Cry Me a River" the song she first performed on her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for 1974 due to her performance in Emergency! as Nurse Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her career began as an actress while she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year-long acting career began in 1944 , with roles in movies. These included roles as the female lead in many westerns. London also starred alongside Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-1950s she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional musical career. The final album of her studio was released in 1969. She maintained her popularity as the female star role in the role of Dixie McCall on the television show Emergency! (1972-1979), where she was a co-star along with Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
